March 2005 – One of ten individuals profiled in Minnesota Monthly magazine in an article entitled, “Real Power: Movers & Makers.”

October 7, 2004 – Received the Edith Wortman First Amendment Matrix Foundation Award at The Association for Women in Communications Annual Professional Conference in Charlotte , NC . More information can be found online at http://www.womcom.org/conference2004/jkirtleybio.html .

August 2001 – The Law Division of AEJMC was honored as having the best programming of any division for that organization’s 2001 convention. During that time, Professor Kirtley served as Professional Freedom and Responsibility chair for the Law Division and worked as both organizer and moderator for two of the panels.

March 1, 2001 – University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Campus, named a member of the affiliated faculty of the University of Minnesota Law School.

February/March 2001 – National Freedom of Information Act Hall of Fame, named Chair, Selection Committee.

June 2000 – Washington, D.C., named a First Amendment Fellow by the National Press Club.

April 15, 2000 – Little Rock, Ark., appointed "Arkansas Traveler" by the Governor of Arkansas.
